Donbass Arena - Shakhtar Donetsk Stadium

One of the most exciting and prestigious contracts fulfilled by SIS in 2009 was the construction of the natural turf pitch for the new Donbass Arena in the Ukraine. Built to accommodate 50,000 spectators, the Donbass Arena is the brand new, 5 star venue which will host FC Shakhtar Donetsk matches. The stadium was designed by ArupSport who also designed the City of Manchester Stadium and the Beijing National Stadium. It has a superb architectural feature - the soaring roof effect which makes the stadium resemble a flying saucer.

The formal opening of the stadium was on 29 August 2009 and, as the photographs show, it was a lavish spectacle which attracted worldwide media attention. US Pop/R&B singer-songwriter Beyonce Knowles performed a show from her current tour.
 
The First Shakhtar Donetsk match to be held at the Donbass Arena is scheduled for 26 September 2009.

Here are a few statistics about this fabulous new stadium:

• The height of the new stadium is 54m from pitch level to the top of the roof
• Over 120,000 м³ of concrete were poured during construction
• Approximately 4,300 tones of steel were used for construction
• Approximately 3,800 tones of steel were used for the roof structure
• The size of the football field is 105m × 68m (344 feet × 223 feet)
